I was fortunate to attend both NBA playoff games in Dallas this weekend between my Houston Rockets and the Dallas Mavericks. I'm in a strange spot in this series since I'm a Rockets fan at heart, but I have Mavs season tickets and see them much more. The noteworthy thought here is not that I'm a Rockets fan in DFW, but one about whom you surround yourself with.
I noticed that after the game Friday night (big Rockets win) that the Mavs fans left the stadium fairly calmly and with a general "respect" for the visiting Houston team. I overheard quite a few Dallas fans say, "they are really good this year," or "we just don't have enough healthy guys to beat them.”
Not surprisingly, but very interesting to me, the fans had quite a different tone after the game last night (big Mavs win.) Dallas fans were shouting in unison, both in the stadium and all the way down the escalators and out into the city, "Houston sucks! Houston sucks!" Now, I come from a mindset that says I want to play the best to be the best. I want to beat the best to know that I'm good or even have a chance at being great.
These fans of a team that is now still down 3-1 in a 7 game series felt it was advantageous to proclaim that the team they are struggling mightily to defeat "sucks." What does that say about them?
That's plenty of NBA talk, but the lingering thought I had all night last night and this morning, is this: Who am I "competing" with? Am I deliberately getting around the best in my business, the most committed at my church, the most sacrificial husbands, the most consistent and loving dads or am I feeling pretty great about myself as I judge others around me to be chumps? I sure hope and pray that I'm doing whatever it takes to get around men and women who challenge, push, encourage and sharpen me to be better and to be the man that God created me to be.
