Let’s talk about the people packing up their lives, loading the U-Haul, and pointing the GPS toward Dallas-Fort Worth. Every week, I hear some version of the same thing: “Everyone’s moving here from California.” And while some are, recent data from one specific source tells a different story about who’s coming and why.

 

Where They’re Coming From

U-Haul tracks their rental data every year, which gives us a real-time peek into migration trends. Based on their numbers, the top three states sending people into DFW right now are Louisiana, Florida, and Oklahoma.

  • Louisiana: Not a surprise. It’s the “one state over” move—common for job relocations, family connections, and cost-of-living upgrades.
  • Florida: This one surprises people. Florida is one of the hot destinations itself, so why would people leave? The answer is what I call the “Sun Belt shuffle.” Folks choosing between Florida, Texas, and maybe Arizona often bounce between them depending on jobs, family, or lifestyle fit. If you’re leaving Florida, chances are Texas is high on your list.
  • Oklahoma: Again, proximity matters. A move one state south often means more opportunity, bigger companies, and better long-term prospects without giving up the culture and values people grew up with.

Now, is California still sending plenty of folks here? Absolutely. People are regularly moving from the Pacific Northwest, the Midwest, and the Northeast as well. But those big cross-country moves don’t always show up in U-Haul’s data because fewer people are willing to drive a truck that far. Many are instead hiring national moving companies.

 

So does this report from U-Haul tell the whole story? No. But it provides an interesting data point for the conversation. 

 

Why They’re Moving Here

Here’s the bottom line: DFW is magnetic right now.

  • Jobs and opportunity: We’ve got a diverse economy, major corporate relocations, and a lower cost of living than most big metros.
  • Lifestyle: Big backyards, small acreage, space to breathe. Families are discovering they don’t have to trade community or opportunity for room to spread out.
  • Cost of living: Taxes aren’t perfect here, but compared to where many people are coming from, they feel like a bargain.
  • Culture and values: A lot of families moving here from Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Florida find that DFW feels like home, just with more opportunity.

The truth is, Dallas-Fort Worth has become a destination in its own right—not just a pit stop, not just a cheaper option. For families, professionals, and even retirees, it’s a place where you can plant roots, enjoy both the city and the land, and build a future.
