"You can't do that."

"You won't finish."

"That's a little ambitious don't you think?"

Any of these sound familiar? I hope not, but I'd bet they do. Maybe you've had people use even stronger language like "people like you/us don't get to do that."

I'd strongly advise not letting people talk to you that way. I'd even more aggressively encourage you not to TALK TO YOURSELF that way. Do you ever mutter under your breath "yeah right," "not gonna happen," or "here comes another disappointment?"

I've found that at each new level of success in all areas of my life there has been both an addition of positive and healthy habits, ideas and practices and a subtraction of negative habits, ideas and practices. One of, if not the most, powerful subtraction I've made and remade over time is to remove negative self-talk. This can sound a little woo-woo, but the reality is that if I tell myself I'm weak, undisciplined and incapable, I'm a lot less likely to become stronger, more disciplined and more capable.

Here are a few tips:

When you recognize any negative self talk, just say to yourself "stop." Then, replace that thought with a more valuable one.

When others say negative things to you, either say, "I'd prefer if you were supportive of my dreams," or make a note to spend less time with that person. You chose!

Tell the people around you that you want to improve in this area and I bet you'll start to really pick up on these and start to improve quickly!

Have a stupendous week!
