The start of a new year is always a great time to set and review our goals. One of many areas where I’m doing this is with my back yard goals. Whether you’ve got sprawling acreage or a cozy little slice of outdoor space, let’s talk backyard goals for 2025. Because let’s face it, nothing feeds the soul like fresh air, good company, and making your yard a place where memories are made.

Heal the Land

This year, I’m leaning into a theme I’m calling “Heal the Land.” It’s all about slowing down, getting my hands dirty, and adding life (literally) to the yard. I’ve spent years landscaping and maintaining, but now I want to move beyond the manicured lawn and focus on sustainability and creativity.

One goal? A salsa garden.

I’m dreaming about plucking tomatoes, jalapeños, and cilantro right from my own back yard to create fresh, homemade salsa. It’s simple, it’s satisfying, and it connects me to the land in a way grocery shopping never will. Here in North Texas, cherry tomatoes like Sweet 100s thrive, peppers practically grow themselves, and with a little care, you can enjoy two full salsa-growing seasons each year—spring and fall. Even if your yard is on the smaller side, this is a project you can tackle with pots and a bit of sunshine.

Fun with Functionality

It’s not just about growing things; it’s about using the space for fun and relaxation. At our house, the pickleball court is a multi-use staple. Sure, we play pickleball, but it’s also become the spot for basketball, roller skating, four square, hopscotch, and just about anything else the kids (and their friends) can dream up. Having a designated space like this makes it easy to say “yes” to active fun.

If you don’t have a dedicated court, no worries. A simple, well-prepped patio or driveway can go a long way toward creating the same kind of space.

Backyard Entertaining Goals

Let’s talk about hosting. One of my favorite things is inviting people over to enjoy the yard. In 2025, I’m dreaming up ways to make those gatherings even more special. Here’s what’s on my backyard hosting wish list this year:

Outdoor Cooking Upgrades: I’ve already got my sights set on maximizing the grill and smoker this year. From brisket to burgers to breakfast tacos on a Blackstone, I’m ready to feed a crowd.

A Heated Pool (Maybe Someday): There’s nothing quite like a winter pool party. Heat the pool, invite your friends, and you’ve got an event no one will forget. Not in the cards yet? That’s okay. Hosting in the warmer months is just as fun.

Game-Day Ready: With a mounted TV and comfy seating, my backyard becomes the ultimate game-day destination. Whether it’s college football in the fall or a random Tuesday night, the goal is to make it easy for people to come together.

Restoration and Relaxation

For me, the yard isn’t just a place for entertaining—it’s also a sanctuary. Whether it’s sipping coffee in the morning while listening to the birds or watching the sunset with my family, I want to create more moments of calm in 2025.

This year, I’m focusing on small touches that make a big difference:

Garden Restoration: A few simple tweaks to existing flowerbeds or adding drought-tolerant plants that thrive in our Texas climate.

Comfort Upgrades: Outdoor furniture that’s both functional and comfortable for relaxing evenings.

Family Projects: Getting the kids involved in planting or building a birdhouse to make the space feel even more personal.

Keep It Simple, Keep It Joyful

Your backyard goals should reflect what brings you and your family joy. That could be a full-blown outdoor kitchen. Maybe it’s just a patch of grass where the kids can run barefoot. Either way, the goal is to make the space work for you.

If you’re not sure where to start, here’s my challenge: Pick one small thing. Maybe it’s a salsa garden, string lights, or even just a comfy chair where you can read a book outside. Once you’ve got that going, let the inspiration (and joy) build from there.
