My great grandfather taught my older brother and me to play checkers. You may be from a chess type family, but "Pop" taught me checkers when I was really young.

I was reminded of double jumps, kinged men and not moving backwards this week as I was (and still am) bombarded with time sensitive decisions that will have lasting impact on my business, home, family and finances.

Do I hire a new team member?

Do I replace the roof?

Do I commit to leading another men's Bible study?

Do I dare travel for more than a few days during a massive remodel?

Then I was reminded of my favorite lesson from Pop.

"Always think two moves ahead" he told me.

I must have been 5 or so when he shared that wisdom as it is one of my very first memories. So, here I am. I'm a grown man with a wife, children, business and at least some version of a home:

And, what am I thinking this morning?

What are my next two moves? If I do the roof and then hit a snag also, where does that leave the budget?

If we hire a new person and they succeed/fail, what would my NEXT move be?

If I say yes to leading in another area at church, will I have the time to meet all of my commitments with excellence and joy?

I'll couple that advice with even more important advice I was given by my great grandmother "Other Mama" (don't judge family names!):

She said, "Pray! Fold your hands and pray."

These two bits of wisdom have always served me well. I share them with you to remind you that life is complex, but also to encourage you that a little thinking and a lot of prayer go a long way!

Merry Christmas!
