I was going about 84 on the way to church yesterday when my wife told me to "slow down and chill out."

Let me back up a little bit and explain. We just started a new Plano campus of Watermark Community Church yesterday. It was our first Sunday service anyway. I was so excited about the opportunity to get started and to share life changing good news with friends, families and strangers in Plano and surrounding areas that I just wanted to hurry up and get there.

This is kinda what I do. I get on board with an idea or a mission and I dive all in and am fully committed. Couple my faith and a group of folks that share that and throw in the opportunity to start and grow something and I'm all hopped up like when they used to sell JOLT cola. I was annoyed when my wife even suggested that I calm down.

But, as is often the case, she was right in a sense. Not that I shouldn't be energetic and excited, but that I shouldn't let it cause me to go 84 with a car full of my family in an area where that speed is let's just say not encouraged by a large margin. (I didn't even know I was going that fast, I promise.)

So, what's my point?

I hope you have at least one thing in your life that you are as fired up and passionate about. If not, schedule some time in and seek that out. Look for purposeful pursuits that will make a lasting difference and I predict you'll be all in in no time. But, also understand that an unhealthy tunnel vision on that one thing at the risk of your family relationships or your other life callings is foolish.

I see this more with career or financial pursuits, but even something as seemingly noble as the opening of a new church facility has the potential to take more focus than it deserves.

I hope that in the hustle of our busy lives, we all have exciting things going on, but I remind myself and you as well that too often the most important things get put aside for the most exciting, new and fresh thing.
