On July 3rd 1776, John Adams wrote this to his wife Abigail:
"The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more."
While we all likely grew up celebrating the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, it is fun to know that we've all been eating hamburgers and hot dogs in honor of the signing of the notice to the world of a decision that was finalized two days earlier. Regardless of the date, those 13 original colonies separated from Great Britain 237 years ago this week and I'm a big fan of their work.
Imagine what freedoms we have that are the envy of the world and be thankful for the men and women who sacrificed life, limb, fortune and reputation to secure our way of life. As a business owner, husband, father and follower of Jesus, I'll be having a burger, dog and likely a few ice cold root beers (really) to celebrate this incredible nation and the freedoms that come with being a fortunate citizen. Do me a favor and do the same. Get out of the house, spend time with family and friends and neighbors and exercise the full depth and breadth of your freedoms!
