This weekend we had a party for my daughter's birthday. We had a pony come and the kids got to take pony rides around the back yard. When my wife told me that it would be a princess pony, I didn't fully respect what that meant. 
The very normal looking small horse climbed out of the trailer and I thought, "maybe they'll put a girly saddle on her or something." Then this seventeen or eighteen-year-old marketing genius got out the Halloween style hair color spray and went to town on the horse's main and tail in full on bright pink. He also sprayed sparkles all over this poor animal's hooves.
Needless to say, the little girls loved it. But, as I tipped this kid and he told me he was headed to his third party of the day and picking up another worker on his way back to the farm, I thought about how smart this kid, or whoever he was working for, is.
I could be wrong, but I figure they have a small farm and for extra money offer petting zoos and pony rides. Then one day, someone asked for a pony for a princess party or a little girls party and some instinctive member of the team blurted out, "we could spray the horse's hair" and a new market was born. A higher priced market too.
I love this stuff. It makes me wonder what I'm missing in my own business and life. Does it make you think? What opportunity may be laying just under the surface in your life?
