I was talking to my team the other day and I shared a story about my grandfather that I'd like to share with you too.
We were discussing how life can beat us down sometimes and I was reminded of a story that my grandfather told me about how he used to call my grandmother from work on really hard days and say, "I need a pep talk."
This reminded me that the idea of a "me file" is worthy of consideration. Yes, a "me file."
I have a file that I labeled with the word "ME" on it. I only put items in there that are from another person or organization and are positive about me. This might sound insane or egotistical or both, but stay with me here.
You don't have to be in sales or marketing to see that rejection and disappointment are a regular part of life. The narcissism, self doubt, insecurity and fear that many people are living with cause them to lash out at us, demean us, belittle us or even just overlook us. Such is life.
You should be prepared to counter balance the negativity with a stack of personal reminders about your gifts, abilities, triumphs, successes, achievements and wins.
Put anything you get in an email, text, card, voice mail or any other form of communication into your folder. Print this stuff, retype it, write it down or anything you have to do to get it in your "me file."
Get this folder out any time you feel the scales tipping too far towards negativity, doubt or if you start believing the lies that the world is telling you.
God made you to be you, not to be who the world wants you to be!
