I thought about you this morning as I was preparing to lead our team meeting. I hate the word meeting by the way; I just haven't come up with anything better. Anyway, I was preparing to coach my team on some key ways that we can better connect with and serve our clients. If we had it our way, all we would ever do is fight hard for our awesome client friends and then very naturally they would introduce us to several friends, coworkers and family members each year. The point is that we love the work of representing great people and we would gladly pass on marketing and advertising for new clients that we have no connection with yet. We are growing towards a "referral only" business.
As I lead my company and our team in that direction, I'm reminded that as I am the leader and coach for my team, I also need a voice of reason and counsel in my ear. I have a great group of best friends from church who keep me accountable to my commitments, pursuits and my overall purpose. I then hire highly skilled coaches within the world of business. These people are willing to tell me when I'm being an idiot and are eager to encourage wise growth and implementation. As an independent business owner, I can often find myself isolated and "on an island" in my decision-making. I have to remind myself that I have a great community of purposeful men and women as well as hired experts to back me up.
Who is backing you up? Who do you have in your life that will verbally smack you when you are headed in an unhealthy direction or encourage you when you are getting it right?
The military strategy of divide and conquer has always been true. Any of us in isolation will find a way to mess life up. Whether it be in your business life, personal life or the whole darn thing, I'm reminding myself and you that we were made for relationship and we need backup every once in awhile
I hope this encourages you to schedule a lunch or make a needed call this week to further connect with a trusted friend or to re-establish that level of relationship with someone important.
