The 8 acres that make up the Galatyn Park Woodland Preserve include a play area for children with climb-friendly versions of critters one might see in the park, such as beavers, snakes, rabbits and turtles. You’ll also find a wooden boardwalk over a marshy area, perfect for observing birds and wildlife, picnic tables, a chess/checkers table, a horseshoe pit and wetland ponds.
In the spring, Poppies, Indian Paintbrush and other wildflowers grow along the shady trail that meanders through the preserve, where mature oak, elm and ash trees help block out the sounds of traffic. The park’s hike-and-bike trail connects to the DART light-rail system and the Spring Creek Nature Area that are part of the city’s 40-mile trail system.
Spring Creek Nature Area offers approximately 2 miles of hike-and-bike trails in 51 acres of hardwood forest with natural overlooks and a pedestrian bridge over the winding Spring Creek. Picnic tables, scenic rest stops and even a horseshoe pit are scattered along the trail with lots of interesting little places you can explore.
The 417 acres that compose Breckinridge Park include 4.5 miles of multi-use trails, pavilions that are reservable, restroom facilities and drinking fountains, playgrounds, picnic tables, rest stops, a beautiful woodland nature area, a 10-acre lake, a number of athletic fields and parking. This park reminds nature lovers what North Texas once looked like: fields of wildflowers, a deep limestone creek winding through the woods, and an open prairie covered with grasses. It is also home to songbirds and butterflies in the spring and to numerous permanent and migratory birds in the fall. While observing the natural beauty and variety of species at Breckinridge, you might also notice riparian, prairie and upland forest habitats in the area.
